A battery energy storage facility is recommended for approval in Sunderland to store energy generated by renewables like wind and solar panels. It would release energy during periods of extreme demand. The site chosen is close to the Offerton substation. Council planners identified the site for its proximity to the substation allowing for below ground connection.
