French manufacturing startup Carbon plans to commission its gigafactory in late 2026 in Fos-sur-Mer, France, becoming Europe's largest PV manufacturing facility. The gigafactory aims to bring 5GW of cell and 3.5GW of module manufacturing capacity to the European solar sector. Carbon one, the pilot unit of the gigafactory, will start production in autumn 2025 with an annual capacity of 500MW. This facility will produce one million PV panels per year and employ 200 people. Carbon will focus on tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) production initially and is open to investing in tandem technologies in the future. The European Solar Manufacturing Council expressed concerns over the lack of European-based manufacturing capacity and oversupply of cheap Chinese products, jeopardizing the European PV manufacturing industry. French economy minister Bruno Le Maire advocates for 'Made in France' panels to boost the French PV manufacturing industry.
