CO2 is CO2: Zero Waste Europe calls for including incineration in EU ETS

Municipal waste incineration needs to be fully included in the European Union’s Emission Trading System (EU ETS) according to Zero Waste Europe. Zero Pollution Policy Manager at Zero Waste Europe, Janek Vahk emphasizes the importance of addressing both fossil and non-fossil CO2 emissions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The European Commission is required to assess the inclusion of incinerators in the EU ETS by 2028, with hopes of including all CO2 emissions and lowering the threshold for facility inclusion to prevent system manipulation.
