Colbun plans up to 800-MW ocean-powered pumped-storage HPP in Chile

Chilean utility Colbun SA plans to build a 800 MW pumped-storage hydropower plant in northern Chile using water from the Pacific Ocean. The project, named Paposo, aims to store excess renewable energy by circulating desalinated water between upper and lower reservoirs. Colbun has submitted an environmental impact study for approval, with an investment of USD 1.4 billion. The construction involves utilizing a natural coastal cliff, desalination plant, water catchment system, and power lines.
