Colbún proposes 800 MW ocean-powered pumped storage project in Chile

Pumped hydro (PHES) is being overtaken by battery energy storage as the dominant energy storage technology worldwide. Chilean utility Colbún plans to construct an 800 MW pumped-storage hydropower plant using the Pacific Ocean for energy storage. The project aims to circulate desalinated water between reservoirs for storing and releasing excess renewable energy, benefiting nearly half a million households.
