Pumped hydro (PHES) has long been the dominant energy storage technology worldwide, but today’s rapidly growing battery energy storage fleet looks set to overtake the throne. Chilean utility Colbún plans an 800 MW pumped-storage hydropower plant in the northern part of the country. They aim to create a power station circulating desalinated water between reservoirs for storing and releasing excess renewable energy. The project would be the first in Latin America based on closed-circuit desalinated water recirculation, benefiting almost half a million households.
