Pumped hydro (PHES) has long been the dominant energy storage technology worldwide, but the rapidly growing battery energy storage fleet is likely to overtake PHES. Colbún, a Chilean utility, plans an 800 MW pumped-storage hydropower plant using desalinated water recirculation. The project aims to provide clean and sustainable energy for households.
