Pumped hydro (PHES) has long been the dominant energy storage technology worldwide, but battery energy storage is rapidly growing and likely to overtake PHES. Colbún in Chile plans a new 800 MW pumped-storage hydropower plant using desalinated water. The project aims to store excess renewable energy and provide clean energy to households.
