Researchers at the University of Padova in Italy proposed to improve residential air heat pumps by combining them with air-geothermal heat exchangers, resulting in up to 30% reduction in power consumption. They studied the performance of this combination in a HVAC system in a passive single-family building in Valtellina, northern Italy. The study identified main factors affecting system performance and quantified energy consumption reduction by integrating the air-geothermal heat exchanger. Another research team at the same university presented a solar-assisted heat pump using different evaporator technologies.
