The European Commission has approved an Italian scheme to support 4590MW of new renewable energy capacity, aiding the EU's strategic objectives like the European Green Deal. The scheme aims to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels and accelerate the green transition by supporting production of electricity from renewable sources through a levy on electricity bills. The scheme will finance construction of new plants using innovative technologies like geothermal, offshore wind, solar, tidal, wave, marine energy, biogas, and biomass, expected to add 4.6GW of renewable electricity capacity to Italy. This support will be in the form of contracts for difference and will encourage transparent bidding process for selecting projects.
