Council approves battery energy storage facility

Plans for a battery energy storage facility in Sunderland have been approved by city councillors. The facility by Newton Energi will store energy from renewables and release it during peak demand. Despite concerns about fire risks and environmental impact, the development was unanimously approved. An operation manager highlighted safety measures to prevent fires. A similar scheme in Boldon Colliery was recently rejected.
