Claire Coutinho has been retained to oversee energy and net zero in the Conservative Party’s shadow cabinet appointed by ex-PM Rishi Sunak. Sunak has appointed interim shadow ministerial team ahead of the opposition party’s leadership race. Coutinho will shadow Ed Miliband who is the UK’s new Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. He replaced Coutinho following a landslide victory for the Labour party in the UK’s (4 July) general election. Miliband held the shadow energy brief since April 2020 when Keir Starmer became Labour leader. He previously served as Energy Secretary within former prime minister Gordon Brown’s administration between 2008-10. Coutinho was appointed Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero on 31 August 2023.
