EIB to advise Bulgaria on two new pumped-storage hydro plants

The European Investment Bank (EIB) signed an agreement with Bulgaria's National Electricity Company (NEK) for advisory support on the construction of two large pumped-storage hydropower plants in southwestern Bulgaria. The projects, Batak and Dospat, aim to enhance storage capacity and strengthen electricity supply in Bulgaria and the EU. These plants are expected to function as large rechargeable batteries, providing flexible management and additional balancing services. The partnership is crucial for achieving energy transition and decarbonisation goals, improving energy security and infrastructure.
