A new report by Ember Climate highlights that the world's spare solar manufacturing capacity could significantly exceed the 2030 renewable energy deployment target, presenting an opportunity to improve access to electricity in the Global South. The report forecasts a global solar deployment of 3,473GW by 2030, which is substantially lower than the solar manufacturing capacity of around 7,310GW during the same period. The dominance of China in solar manufacturing, with 85% of the world's solar PV manufacturing capacity, is contributing to oversupply and under-deployment challenges globally. The article emphasizes the importance of addressing under-deployment by expanding solar sectors in developing countries to align with global energy transitions and meet climate targets.
