A new report by think tank Ember Climate highlights the excessive manufacturing capacity in the global solar sector, especially in China, which could significantly exceed renewable energy deployment targets by 2030. The report emphasizes the under-deployment of solar capacity worldwide due to grid inefficiencies, leading to an oversupply of solar panels. It suggests that utilizing the spare manufacturing capacity could help meet UN renewable power targets by 2029 and address energy access issues in the Global South. Investment in overseas markets, particularly in developing countries, is proposed to bridge the gap between manufacturing and deployment, potentially providing electricity to 809 million people in need.
