Researchers from the European Commission have developed a methodology to quantify the carbon footprint of PV modules for use in regulatory contexts like the EU Ecodesign Directive. They proposed a method that involves a life cycle assessment hotspot analysis and adaptation of PEFCRs for ecodesign requirements. The approach includes a sensitivity analysis of silicon content, module yield, and electricity grid mix used in manufacturing. Setting ecodesign requirements for PV modules could lead to significant energy savings.
