Serbia plans to build biomass heating plants in Niš, Bajina Bašta, Prijepolje, Rača, and Novi Pazar to replace fuel oil and coal in district heating systems. The second phase of the project aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 88% and eliminate sulfur dioxide emissions. The European Union is providing a EUR 10 million grant for the project, with additional funding from Germany's KfW Development Bank and donations from the Federal Republic of Germany. The initiative aligns with environmental protection efforts under Chapter 27 of Serbia's accession negotiations.
