Three Fraunhofer institutes in Germany have developed an alternative method for hydrogen production using photoelectrochemical cells and solar energy. The solution involves a tandem PEC module made of coated glass with semiconducting materials. The module enables flexible hydrogen production and uses high-purity semiconductor materials. It generates hydrogen and oxygen separately, with the capability of producing 30 kg of hydrogen per 100 square meters of module area. The system includes photovoltaic elements to increase efficiency. The project has successfully conducted field tests and aims to continue in a follow-up project.
