The Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Systems (IEG) is building a new Laboratory Facility for Sector-Coupled Utilization of PEM Electrolysis Products in Zittau, Germany. The facility includes an electrolyzer, heat pump, and aims to optimize the coupling of electrolyzers and heat pumps in electricity, heat, or hydrogen-driven operation. The waste heat from electrolysis is used for district heating. The researchers are testing the operational optimization of the system concept and the efficient coupling of these technologies.
