Greek renewables breach record, leading to historic emissions low

Renewables surpassed fossil fuels in Greece’s power production for the first time in the first four months of 2024, reducing the power sector’s emissions to a new low. Greece became a net exporter due to near-zero and negative hourly prices in the wholesale market. Carbon intensity in electricity production decreased significantly over the years, with emissions falling from 500 grams to 268 grams of CO2 per kilowatt-hour in 2024.
