Researchers at the Silesian University of Technology in Poland investigated the use of dye concentrators to enhance photovoltaic module performance, with potential efficiency increase ranging from 0.05% to 1.42%. The dyes used for concentrators have different requirements compared to those in dye-sensitized solar cells, aiming to focus sunlight onto silicon cells without undergoing chemical reactions. Testing showed average efficiency increases of 1.21% for red luminescent PMMA, 0.25% for yellow luminescent PMMA, 0.41% for yellow pigmented PMMA, and 0.13% for red pigmented PMMA, with red luminescent PMMA as the best performer. The new technology has the potential to enhance solar cell efficiency, especially in regions with scattered irradiation during winter.
