Research groups in Europe are exploring the integration of solar cells on various parts of electric vehicles to extend their driving range. A European research team led by Bin Luo has made progress in developing lightweight PV modules with high reliability, focusing on interconnection and encapsulation strategies. The team identified carbon-fiber reinforced plastics as promising for module construction. Through damp heat and mechanical impact tests, they addressed failures like cracks in solar cells and module delamination, resulting in design improvements for improved resilience. Their study, published in Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells, emphasized the need for further testing and cost optimization for commercialization.
