A European group of scientists has developed a novel double-layer hydrophobic antireflective coating for glass substrates of PV modules using a sol-gel process. The coating consists of a silica-titania bottom layer and an inorganic-organic top layer modified with triethoxy(octyl)silane. The coating exhibits promising optical properties, including high transmittance and low reflectance. It also shows improved water contact angle and surface free energy, making it less wettable. The durability and adhesion of the coating were found to be excellent, indicating its potential value in enhancing the efficiency and stability of solar cells.
