Nuclear technologies are projected to play a key role beyond traditional grid electricity supply according to the World Nuclear Association's 2024 report. The report highlights rising demand from sectors such as data centers, electric vehicles, chip production, battery manufacturing, and desalination. Nuclear reactors generated 2.6 PWh in 2023, accounting for 9% of the world's electricity and demonstrating high performance. France led in global output growth with over 60% nuclear electricity powering the summer Olympics. There is growing interest in nuclear energy to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors and reduce CO2 emissions. Discussions on tripling global nuclear capacity are underway with increased policy support and development of new technologies like small modular reactors.
