Sports car company Porsche has deployed a 10MWh BESS at its factory in Germany using repurposed batteries from its Taycan vehicle line. The BESS project utilizes 4,400 modules from preseries, works, and R&D Taycan vehicles. It has a power output of 5MW and an energy storage capacity of 10MWh, being partly powered by a 9.4MW solar array. Alwin Schmid, head of electrical engineering at Porsche, discusses the project's environmental and energy supply aspects. Jonathan Dietrich, overall project manager for battery storage at Porsche, aims to make the Leipzig plant more economical and self-sufficient. The project aims to gain insights for potential similar deployments at other Porsche locations and utilizes batteries from test cars for second useful deployments.
