Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian has completed sea trial tests for ultra-deep installation of a 500 kV HVDC MI1 wire in 2150 metres of water. This is an industry record and the first time an HVDC wire is laid at such a depth. Prysmian's non-metallic armoured cable, designed with composite material based on high modulus synthetic fibres, is 50% lighter than steel. This, combined with the Leonardo da Vinci cable-laying vessel, allows the installation and maintenance of Terna’s Tyrrhenian Link at a depth of over 2000 metres. The success of the sea trials highlights Prysmian's innovative cable technology.
