The Queensland government has invested AU$25 million in a factory in Queensland to manufacture flow batteries based on iron electrolyte technology. The factory, under construction by Energy Storage Industries – Asia-Pacific (ESI), aims to have an initial 200MW/1,600MWh annual production capacity. ESI also plans to install, maintain, and finance battery energy storage solutions. The investments from the government and private funds aim to establish a new battery manufacturing industry in Queensland as part of the Energy and Jobs Plan. Queensland supports clean energy initiatives including lithium-ion and flow battery manufacturing. The government also recognized the potential of iron flow batteries by ESS Inc-ESI and zinc-bromine hybrid flow systems. Pilot projects featuring these technologies are being supported. Additionally, support is provided for vanadium redox flow batteries, focusing on vanadium deposits in Queensland.
