Renewable energy is intermittent, says councillor

In 2023, renewables accounted for 41.1% of the UK's total electricity generation, with wind contributing 29.4% and solar 4.9%. Councillor Colin Davie, a senior Lincolnshire Conservative county councillor, expressed concerns about locating solar projects on high-quality farmland due to the intermittency of renewable energy. He supported solar projects on brownfield sites and rooftops, emphasizing the importance of balancing renewables with food security. The Energy Secretary approved solar projects in Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire, which could generate 1.4GW, enough to power 406,994 homes. The debate highlighted the need for a strategic approach to integrating renewable energy sources while considering food production and energy security.
