Scientists from Russia, China, Japan, and Italy synthesized new polyhydrides, specifically cesium heptahydride (CsH7) and rubidium nonahydride (RbH9), potentially enhancing hydrogen storage capabilities. These compounds absorb hydrogen significantly more than existing materials and were developed under high pressure, but pose challenges due to the rarity and reactivity of cesium and rubidium. The research reflects a shift in approach to find more efficient hydrogen storage materials and underlines the importance of these findings for future applications in hydrogen batteries.
