RheEnergise, a British company, is launching a pilot facility that utilizes a dense fluid, instead of water, to store surplus energy from renewable sources. This new technology, dubbed High-Density Hydro system, leverages a fluid denser than water mixed with a proprietary mineral powder R19, enabling energy storage at smaller sites. It claims to offer a low-cost, efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to both pumped storage and lithium-ion batteries. The pilot is being set up in a kaolin mine in Devon, operated by Sibelco, with plans for larger scale deployment if successful.
