The Government of Sweden rejected a proposal to build a 700 MW subsea interconnector between Sweden and Germany due to inefficiency of the German electricity market and fears of increased power prices. The Hansa PowerBridge project aimed to transmit renewable electricity from Scandinavia. Southern Sweden already faces an electricity deficit, and connecting it to Germany could further destabilize the market. German grid operator 50Hertz viewed the cable as a way to strengthen Europe's electricity market. Sweden's decision is not expected to impact Germany's system stability. Germany aims to stabilize its grid by integrating solar and wind capacity, having added 17 GW of renewables in 2023.
