Sweden opts against subsea interconnector with Germany over power price concerns

The Government of Sweden rejected a proposal to build a subsea interconnector with Germany citing inefficiency of German electricity market and fears of pushing power prices up. Hansa PowerBridge aimed at transmitting renewable electricity from Scandinavia to Germany. Connecting southern Sweden with Germany could destabilize the market leading to higher power prices. Germany's power market lacks price areas to manage grid bottlenecks. Hansa PowerBridge would have connected Güstrow in Germany with Hörby in Sweden. Germany's renewables capacity grew by 17 GW in 2023.
