The UK government has reached an agreement with National Grid to acquire the Electricity System Operator (NGESO) which will be transferred to public ownership. This move is part of London’s drive to set up a publicly owned National Energy System Operator (NESO) to connect new generation projects with the grid, working alongside Great British Energy for renewable energy deployment by 2030. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized the importance of moving to clean, cheap, homegrown power to reduce bills, strengthen energy independence, and create skilled jobs. NESO, chaired by Paul Golby and led by Fintan Slye, will oversee strategic planning of electricity and gas networks, bridging the gap to accelerate the transition to net zero. Key stakeholders like National Grid and Ofgem are looking forward to collaborating with NESO for a more integrated and coordinated strategy to tackle climate change, ensure energy security, and keep bills as low as possible.
