The research conducted by Fraunhofer ISE, Technical University of Berlin, and Rena Technologies focuses on reducing water consumption in solar cell manufacturing plants. They proposed circular water strategies like LCR and MLD approaches to save water and wastewater indirect discharge. Implementing these strategies can lead to cost savings and feasibility of building new plants in locations with less water availability. However, challenges include ensuring the quality of by-products and the availability of local buyers. Furthermore, the initial CAPEX investment for setting up PERC production is higher in the case of a MLD setup.
