'Windiest part of the UK' could power nearly 500,000 homes. Energy from the Shetland Isles flows to mainland Britain for the first time with the launch of the UK's most productive onshore windfarm called Viking. The windfarm can generate 443 megawatts of electricity, enough to power nearly 500,000 homes. The project is part of a significant acceleration in renewable energy infrastructure to meet climate change targets by decarbonizing the energy system. The UK aims for 100% electricity from renewable sources by 2030, shifting away from gas-fired power stations. The project faces criticism for potential landscape impact, benefits distribution, and tensions between fossil fuel and renewable energy industries.
