The European Union and Euratom have given final approval to withdraw from the Energy Charter Treaty due to its incompatibility with the Paris agreement and EU's energy transition goals. Member states will vote on modernising the treaty in the upcoming Energy Charter Conference. The decisions were part of the Belgian roadmap, aiming to break the deadlock and initiate the modernisation process. The withdrawal will take effect one year after notification, and remaining member states' positions on modernisation will apply during the next conference.
