The Ministry of Mining and Energy of Serbia is considering lifting a 1989 moratorium to allow the construction of nuclear power plants, particularly focusing on small modular reactors. The country aims to introduce nuclear energy as a low-carbon electricity source alongside hydro energy and gas. Consultancies are invited to conduct a technical study and analysis of available nuclear energy technologies, including SMRs. The ministry is leaning on the expertise of the international nuclear energy community and considering signing a memorandum of understanding with scientific and academic communities for cooperation.
