Southeast Asia aims to boost clean energy transition by significantly increasing pumped storage hydropower capacity. Currently reliant on fossil fuels for 64% of its total power generation, the region plans to expand its pumped hydro capacity from 2.3 GW to 18 GW by 2033. With ongoing construction of 2.7 GW and further development of 13.3 GW, the region expects investments between $12 billion to $70 billion. Thailand and the Philippines emerge as key renewable energy players, with Thailand projected to add 1.6 GW capacity by 2033, while the Philippines leads in pumped hydro capacity with 5.7 GW in the pipeline.
