US researchers identify rising number of solar siting restrictions

The report from Columbia Law School of New York highlights the widespread and growing opposition to renewable energy projects in the United States. It documents local and state restrictions on renewable energy projects from 1995 to May 2023. The report identifies 228 local restrictions across 35 states and nine state-level restrictions that could block renewable energy projects. The only states without significant restrictions were Alaska, Arizona, and Mississippi. Most state-level restrictions targeted wind power. Despite the rise in laws limiting renewables, solar deployment has seen a record increase in capacity.
