Belgian energy company Luminus has submitted a permit application for a 100-MW/400-MWh battery storage project in the Ghent Canal area of northwestern Belgium. The project aims to bring flexibility and stability services to the electricity grid. The battery energy storage system will be connected to the network of Belgian electricity transmission operator Elia and is expected to be operational by the end of 2026. The stored power will be sufficient to cater to the electricity needs of approximately 42,000 homes daily. This battery project will replace the plan for further gas turbine installations at the Ringvaart power station. Luminus plans to maintain the current power station while introducing the battery storage solution in Ringvaart and Lixhe to support grid flexibility and the integration of renewable energies.
