Renewables met 70% of Portugal's demand in May

Portugal's national grid operator Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) announced that renewable energy plants in the country met almost 70% of national electricity consumption in May. Solar power supplied 12% alone, the highest ever for this source. Non-renewables covered 3% while imported energy was 27%. Overall electricity consumption grew by 2.1%, adjusting for temperature and working days, the increase was 3.2%. During the first five months of the year, renewables met 87% of the nation's power needs, with hydropower leading at 43%, followed by wind power at 30%, solar PV at 8%, and biomass at 6%.
