Italian gas contractor Saipem has deployed a new offshore floating solar array near Froya Island in the Norwegian Sea. The XolarSurf prototype developed by Saipem's Moss Maritime unit is built to endure waves up to 8 meters high. The system can be hybridized with offshore wind turbines, offering a more balanced production profile. The platform, suitable for the aquaculture industry, is capable of providing electricity to remote areas or serving as a hybrid energy solution. Pilot projects of 0.5 to 1 MW are planned as part of the transition to a commercial product.
